"Young Gifted Black" is an initiative and team of young Black, African and Afro-diasporic people who have been organizing regular youth gatherings since 2017. We are currently planning our next meeting, which will take place on a weekend in the spring of 2023. We would like to organize and host the meeting together with young people from different parts of Europe. Therefore, we are currently contacting individuals, groups and organizations in Europe who would like to participate.
The aim of the meeting is to exchange, network and spend time together as Black, African, Afro-diasporic people from different European countries. We would like to create an offer of different workshops, activities and space for exchange and conversation.
Regular Zoom meetings are held, approximately every two weeks. We are happy to welcome interested individuals and groups to the Orga group. Feel free to contact us via Instagram or mail.
The goal of Young Gifted Black Europe is for us to come together for four days in a youth hostel in the spring of 2023. We, that is young people between the ages of 15 and 27 who identify as Black, African or Afro-diasporic.
As an important part of Young Gifted Black Europe we also understand the preparation process of the meeting. This already offers the opportunity to be there and participate in the conception of workshops and projects, networking and applying for funds and many other tasks. Most importantly, it is an opportunity to get involved in a young Black, African and Afro-Diasporic team.
We want to work with blackand African and Afro-diasporic young people from different from different European countries and cities at a central and easily accessible location, to exchange ideas, network and spend time together. We want to exchange about what occupies us in life, what we wish for and what inspires us.
Aware of the fact that racial discrimination based on different ascribed characteristics such as racialization, gender, sexual orientation, disability, nationality, residency status and age intertwine in complex ways, YGB aims to create intersectional spaces of protection and reflection. intertwined, we strive with YGB to create intersectional spaces of protection and reflection.
Another goal is to reflect on the extent to which it would be useful and appropriate to organize more politically as pan-European Black youth groups in order to gain more voice and visibility.
The weekend is organized by an alliance of individuals, the Initiative Black People in Germany (ISD) and Each One Teach One (E.O.T.O.). Other young Black, African and Afro-diasporic interested individuals and groups are welcome to join the orga.
We want to network with young Black, African and Afro-diasporic people from all European countries. Aware of the fact that racial discrimination based on different ascribed characteristics such as racialization, gender, sexual orientation, disability, nationality, residency status and age intertwine in complex ways, with Young Gifted Black we aim to create intersectional spaces of protection and reflection.
We want to unite and confront these collective experiences of discrimination together to co-create spaces of empowerment and unite young, Black, African and Afro-diasporic voices in Europe.
The project Young Gifted Black was created at the national meeting of the Initiative Black People in Germany (ISD) and took place between 2017 and 2019. The orga team consisted largely of Black youth and young people. The meetings were organized in cooperation with the ISD and Each One Teach One (E.O.T.O.).
During the meetings, there was a joint plenary session every morning in which we discussed content-related topics were discussed. Throughout the days there were workshop offerings such as: Rap, Poetry, Stencil & Anti-Racism, Black History, mentoring opportunities, a workshop on Racial Profiling, a hair workshop, a workshop on sexuality, dance workshops, and many other offerings and spaces, some of which came out of initiatives at the meetings. Such as safer spaces for queer people and spaces for dark skinned people. Due to the pandemic, the YGB meetings have not taken place since 2020.
The YGB is the first meeting of its kind in German history that we know of - self-organized & for Black, African and Afro-diasporic youth.
In 2021, there was an impetus to resume the planning of the Young Gifted Black meetings and to do so on a European level. Because we as a Black young community are so often affected by the same issues related to racism, we want to unite and confront these collective experiences together to create spaces of empowerment and unite young Black voices in Europe.
